FIX: Stop programs from running at startup on Mac: go to Settings Users and Groups Login items and uncheck any app that you don't want to launch when switching your Mac on, or restarting it. This way you'll escape weird crashes that render your Mac frozen. Follow these steps to boot Mac into Recovery Mode: Reboot your Mac. Hold down the Option button when the startup chimes sound. Connect your Time Machine drive. It will take some time for the system to detect the drive. You might need to key in your password. Choose the drive to launch your Mac into Recovery Mode.

When you log out of your Mac or restart it, deselect ”Reopen windows when logging back in” when prompted. Mac clip screen.
Or start up in safe mode, then restart normally. This doesn't change the setting, but your Mac forgets any windows that were open the last time you logged out or restarted.

To prevent apps from remembering the windows they had open, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click General, then select ”Close windows when quitting an app.”

Or press and hold the Shift key while opening an app. This doesn't change the setting, but the app forgets any windows that were open the last time you quit the app.
